How You Can Assist Before Your Child’s Dental Appointment:
For a Toothache:
- Clean around the affected tooth using warm salt water to remove trapped food.
- Use Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for pain relief.
- Avoid using aspirin on the sore tooth or gum.
If There's Facial Swelling:
- Apply a cold compress to the swollen area.
- Schedule a visit to the pediatric dentist promptly.
For a Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek:
- Apply ice to bruised areas.
- Use firm but gentle pressure with sterile gauze for bleeding.
- If bleeding persists, contact the pediatric dentist immediately.
In Case of a Broken Tooth:
- Rinse the area with cold water.
- Apply a cold compress to the injured facial area.
- Administer Ibuprofen every 8 hours for the first 48 hours.
- Contact the pediatric dentist promptly, bringing any broken tooth fragments.
If a Permanent Tooth is Knocked Out:
- Act quickly to save the tooth.
- Hold it by the crown, not the root, and rinse with cold, sterile water.
- Reinsert the tooth within 5 minutes, securing it with a clean piece of gauze.
- If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in cold milk.
- Contact the pediatric dentist or the nearest emergency room immediately.
Suspected Broken Jaw:
- Tie the mouth closed with a towel, tie, or handkerchief.
- Seek immediate assistance from the pediatric dentist or an emergency room.

- Save the filling or crown and contact the pediatric dentist promptly.
- If a crown is loose, have it evaluated within 1 to 2 days to prevent issues with adjacent or opposing teeth.
