Dr. Benjamin Chih-I Chang

Meet Dr. Benjamin Chih-I Chang, a dedicated dental professional with a diverse background and a passion for comprehensive patient care.

 Originally from Taiwan, Dr. Chang spent his formative years in Richmond, British Columbia. His academic journey began at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He then pursued his dental education at The University of Sydney in Australia, obtaining his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.

 Before entering dental school, Dr. Chang actively contributed to the community. His commitment to animal welfare led him to volunteer with the Richmond Animal Protection Society. Additionally, he devoted his time to the palliative care unit at Richmond Hospital, providing support on a weekly basis.

 Dr. Chang’s academic excellence was evident from the start, receiving multiple scholarships upon entry to UBC. His early exposure to research came in high school when he participated in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s summer research program. During his undergraduate years, he conducted research on spinal cord injury with Dr. Andrei Krassioukov, a renowned clinician-researcher. Chang presented his findings at conferences, including the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals in Las Vegas, earning recognition with the Undergraduate Student Research Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

 During dental school, Dr. Chang honed his skills in providing comprehensive dental care within a major hospital setting, working under the direct supervision of specialists. His outstanding literature review on the cancerous nature of oral lichen planus earned him the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons Award for the most outstanding honors project upon graduation.

 Driven by a commitment to lifelong learning, Dr. Chang is a certified Invisalign provider. He has also pursued continuing education in occlusion and temporomandibular joint disorder. Currently enrolled in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry’s MaxiCourse at UBC, Dr. Chang is dedicated to staying at the forefront of dental advancements.

 In his personal time, Dr. Chang finds joy in playing the violin and maintaining an active lifestyle through gym activities. Fluent in both Mandarin and English, he values the interpersonal aspects of dentistry and firmly believes in treating each patient as if they were a cherished member of his own family.
